The importance of doing
Think right now about how many things you have ‘to do’. Is it a long list? What about the things not on the list that you ‘always mean to get to’… that’s getting quite a list isn’t it now? Just like tomorrow never comes and kettles never boil when watched, the only way to approach things should be ‘what can I do now’ not ‘when can I do it’.
Keeping your spark alive with personal work
This web world can be a hard one to work in, you as a designer can easily loose inspiration after the 10th blue website or 20th drop shadow rounded box and lets not get started on how demoralising the 30th gradient can be. When I started out it was all about personal projects, yes I studied software engineering and art but back then there were no web courses. The only way to learn these new languages was to work on personal projects and experiment – it was a great time when possibilities were explored and inspiration flowed.
Removing the chaos for the start of the year
Whilst I’m all for being busy, the last few months have had that extra sprinkle of eeep on top. I’ve been very lucky that work has not even let up with the expected Christmas lull. The downside of this has to be my lack of blog and own project working on. As many of you know this past year I’ve been battling a few health issues and as a result some of the treatments have taken a lot out of me. This has all added up to my usual good coping mechanisms for work loads to break down.
Optimisation through stripping
One the things you always want to do as a business and as a person is to optimise yourself. There are so many things ‘going on’ and we all accumulate baggage that just hangs there like left over Christmas bulge. For some reason the onset of Spring has this weird shedding and readressing effect in me. I don’t think I’m the only one that gets the urge to spring clean and my cleaning usually surrounds my sites, my business and less actual getting soap and water out to clean down cupboards.
Sticky overload
Ok, ok, you can have too many stickies. I just reached maximum sticky mass on my desktop (that really doesn’t sound how it did in my head). A while ago in an attempt to save a few trees I moved onto digital stickies. All was going well until the sticky build up. Today, I couldn’t stand not seeing my desktop anymore and have been looking for another solution. So, in a world where stickies are a need (I am obsessed) what is there as an option?
Hamster in a wheel day
Today was one of “those” days. I like to call them “hamster in the wheel days”. I won’t hear that a hamster is happy in the wheel, yeah the origional “ooo wow a wheel” fun is there but it’s temporary. Eventually even a small hamster brain will get to the “come on I’m going nowhere this sucks” stage. I think from observing hamsters the next stage is “right that’s it if I go faster I will get somewhere”. It seems a pretty self perpetuating cycle of getting nowhere but really fast. I would like to point out I have had hamsters hence the observation and that I am not some dodgy hamster stalker. You won’t catch me late at night watching hamster cam or anything like that.
