Design is in the little things
Design for me is really about those small details. With technology pretty much anyone can make a web page. This is not saying it’s a well designed one. For me, the design comes from the layered small details to make up the entire thing and I believe that the true ‘art’ of design is in these little things.
Design Observer logo
I fully admit to being a paid up member of the simple club with regards to what I like in design. In my book you can’t beat a simple but elegant design solution be that minimal or not. The Design Observer logo is just one example of this in logo format. I personally love the logo’s colour combinations and simple type. It is a great example of branding and clarity and allows the message to come across without clutter or pointless frills.
Feeding the inner designer
In Psychology there is the talk of the inner child. i like to think of an inner designer where it needs to be fed otherwise you get designer temper tantrums where pixels are thrown, fonts beaten up and designs that belong in the recycle bin created. My own inner designer is one that needs to get input on and offline to create the best work. Designer block and burn out is an all too common theme amongst web designers. I think there are (for me anyways) two key times of the year for this – the July – August time and the December – January time. For me, these months are always the hardest to keep on top and enegised about designing. Aside from the seasonal effects, there will inevitably come a time when after going from design to design you reach saturation point and just need to take five.
Inspired by
I talked before in a previous post about what inspires designs. It is something that I am again returning to. I don’t know if it is the stage I am at with design or what, but I keep on looking to how I come up with the concept and not just the concept. For the next version of this site as I have stated before I am working on the seasonal design pattern. This has come as a great idea and the new design is coming on I am glad to say. I have to get it out of the way as got some major projects boiling and want to push them through. Along with this and some other things that happened today I have been thinking again about the design process.
