It’s not big, it’s not clever and the internet is a small place. If you rip a design you will get found out. The internet is a very small place when it comes down to it and not much can stay hidden, especially if you rip a website that is above the flotsam and jetsam of the general web. Design stealing has always been something common and online that often means the deisgn of the function also. One site particular has got the muttering fires burning and ignited the ‘argh be damn original will you – it’s not big and it’s not clever’.
To most people looking at 9rules would make them be inspired; to some it also seems a reason to get the cloning pixel machine out. This particular not too bright site BuzzBums.Com not only loved the design of 9rules, adored the 9rules and the functionality – they figured seeing as it was on the internet it was an invite to get out dolly the sheep and carbon copy themselves a poor twin. Their list of idiocy continues as they go onto add a fair few of 9rules members to their site without asking and then send an email saying their blog has been added (wow how nice of them to add these people). Yes, that was right they stole the design, copied the function of the site and then added people who never wanted to join. Words loose me as to what mind numbing was involved to actually bother doing this.
Ripping people’s designs off is hardly bright and only goes to show your inability to design something yourself. There could be an argument that nothing is new and there are different ways to do things though and slants and variations you can do. All designers are influenced by people, there is a difference (no matter how fine it might be) between influence and theft. Yes, I am waggling a finger whilst standing on a soap box and tutting rather loudly. Nothing really gets my blood boil than blatant ripping of a design just because that person or company is successful. Being original on the web is hard to do and when someone actually does it what is the point in ripping that when it stands out so much in the web conscious. Do these people actually like being tutted at from all corners of the web and being made to stand on the naughty step? Muttering is ensuing from over here as I go to kick a few web designer wannabe web 2.0 band wagon unicorn wrangling idiots. I’ll click that link then shall I for some kicking fodder?

If that is the best C&P they know, they’ll still have to learn alot. That rip is an insult!
No, honestly.
Go Tammie! Thats the way to put it, pull no punches lol… blantant rip and worthy of abuse.
On another note… WOW, you look mighty fine in pink, awesome redesign, I am loving it.
Keep up the passion and originality!
People are always going to try and steel good ideas and themes, but with Tammie making good posts like that hopefully it will put some off he he :)
EXPOSED!!!
It’s hilarious to see that site now that all the 9rulers have fronted up and got removed – lots of tumbleweed about that site. Silly, silly people is about the sum of it all. Pitch fork shaking does work and often you don’t even need to light the torches or gather the angry hordes ;)
Wow, talk about lame. The “company” behind it looks like a “business” that thrives on me-too attempts in every category. Nothing original at all.
The best part about BuzzBums, however, is that one of the “members” is TechCrunch. TECHCRUNCH! I would love to see a BuzzBums banner on TechCrunch soon. That would just bee too funny.
Hi all, how are you guys doing?
I have some feedback…
franky – Isnt much of a rip is it?
karmatosed – I actually had more people send me emails saying thanks for adding there blog than people asking to have there blog took off. Such as…
“Thanks Jon. I hope our two sites can help each other grow.
Best,
BLOGURL”
Montoya – Why would you ever see a banner on techcrunch? I dont even have a banner made up? Buzzbums is a blog directory silly. There is no membership required and all that stuff. I just add the blogs that I think people would like to read.
Thank everyone for the free traffic, if you would like to reach me, my email is jonwaraas (@) gmail.com
Jon, I emailed you because you are using people’s blog content to make money without asking them first. You aggregate people’s writing and slap AdSense around it, I know you’re a young guy trying to make money, but there are more moral ways of doing it.
I have been trying for a while to think of how to reply to this posting Jon. The design elements similarity are becoming a mute point compared to your attitude over this. Great if some people are loving being added. I think the simple thing is that you should out of politeness ask. You may not care and think everyone is whinning on about pointless things as you’ve got an extra $3 of adsense this week. Thing is, bloggers take ages to build up their blogs and you are basically doing gaining off their work – fine if it’s a mutal agreement, not fine if not.
I would suggest calling people silly also isn’t going to make friends and influence bloggers. The thing about 9rules is that the bloggers commit to being in ONE network only. By adding them you are taking that choice from them. Fine, if you want it to be your own ‘good blogs’ list according to you – but just think about asking people next time and maybe designing something a little more original in the same market.
If you have the design skills then just make that leap and do something original. I’d be one of the first people to big up anyone that did something original and went about even the crowded market of blog networking the right way by asking people and not focusing on the quick money. All traffic is not good traffic which you will learn. Just because you are being talked about doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.
Not ripped but heavily heavily inspired. Disappointing either way =/
I’ve looked at the 2 sites and they hardly look similar. Unless someone has changed the look of their site, you have no grounds for objection.
Tam,
you probably want to put a rel=nofollow on that link to BB as you’re giving him undeserved google juice which he’s apparently quite happy about giving the post on his personal blog.
This could all get very nasty, so I will just say this… Many or the 9rules members I am sure will find it very distasteful being added without permission. You have to work incredibly hard to get into 9rules and therefore earn respect by getting in. I am sure this new kid on the block as it were is trying to kick start a new site, but there are much better ways of doing it and emulation never beats the class of the original. The best websites are those that work in conjunction with others with fresh new ideas and sharing. Not by simply copying information and hoping to get some money out of it. My advice… You work something out with 9rules and add to the community rather than it feeling you are taking away. Then you will have something far better than money, respect! Then the rest will fall into place.
It must just be me but it seem this girl doesn’t want competition. The “function” Jon so called “ripped” is nothing new and there are tons of sites that do this. Hell Yahoo has feed submission. As for the design “rip”, I see barly any resemblance maybe the backgrounds both have a diamond base but that is all I notice.
Girl, well it’s been about a decade sice something called me a girl. A chick and a girl in one day – how quaint. I encourage competition if you actually read my comments on this fiasco.
“I’d be one of the first people to big up anyone that did something original and went about even the crowded market of blog networking the right way by asking people and not focusing on the quick money”
I obviously find it funny to have to quote that again as it must have gotten missed. I would love it if he took from this and did something different rather than citing 3 times now about glad of the traffic. As I said, the ripping is the secondry nature and always has been since about comment 134723643872465473 :). It’s the using people’s feeds without them asking and that is what the majority of commentors on here are on about. Anyone else feel dizzy from repeating themselves. I love people doing innovative and new things and even new twists on old ones.
Quote – ” It’s the using people’s feeds without them asking and that is what the majority of commentors on here are on about.”
- I sent emails to all the blogs I used feed’s from. I only got 2 emails from people telling me to take theirs off.
I have been busy with doing offline stuff. However, there will be some changes in the next little while that will make everyone sleep better at night.
I had been told and so had others the sending of emails wasn’t the case hence the comment, whatever the case it’s history now and I’m all for sleeping better ;)
Karma — it’s “moot” point.

You must not quite understand how the internet works if you are worried about someone ripping your feeds. See the thing is.. each feed points back to the website where the rss.xml file is hosted.. which means he is linking all of these feeds. It’d be different if he was consuming the feeds and kicking out his own version of the rss feed, and then jamming a bunch of link farms with links to his feed so that it looked like those feeds were his… if you don’t want your stuff syndicated, don’t make it into a feed…
And both your design and his are very amateurish…
Ok ‘the Dood’ I’m not going to even comment on your last comment – what you like is what you like. I think you maybe need to read my point which is the ripping of the look at that time, this post is from a way back and that was when the rip was very very obvious. Feeds aside that is a worst point. Also, understanding the internet also means you understand that luckily the normal rule is people on the net ask before they use content or feeds. We could use the argument if you don’t want your site copied then don’t put it on the internet. Your site doesn’t have a copyright ‘The Dood’ so you would obviously be fine if someone ripped it then.
