A little late is the monthly round up of what is coming from my speakers this month. This month I finally managed to get my hands on some music that I had been meaning to get for a while. Here are the ones that have been on repeat this month.
- Nouvelle Vague : Bande a part
The album Bande a part was a random purchase on iTunes where I found this gem. It is basically a lot of covers done in what is best summed up as lounge meets cabaret in a tango. A bit of a dance macabre with the odd but lovely offering of a cover of ‘Bela Lugois Dead’. Goth meets lounge lizard is all good. My personal favourites are ‘Dancing with myself’ which is a head nodding, pen tapping number of carefreeness. The last track ‘Confusion’ really reminds me of the sound of early Morcheeba and has touches of Air drifting over the background. - Nina Simone V Groovefinder : Ain’t got no – I got no life
Summer is here and marked for me this month by this uplifting room dancing and head nodding (I am known for my head nodding dancing abilities), arm flinging – anthem. There’s nothing like enacting a movie dance scene in your own house thanks to this melody. Ain’t got no cares whilst this is playing. - Flaming Lips : At war with the mystics
I don’t often get an album from hearing a tune off an advert. For some reason, I had never gotten around to buying this offering from the Flaming Lips, which was odd when I lapped up the first album. I was watching TV and heard ‘It Overtakes me’ over a certain beer advert and instantly was thrown back to the quality memories of their ‘Yoshimi Versus the Robots’. This mixture album is a bit of a journey – which is one thing the Flaming Lips do well. I always think they are one group you have to take the album as a whole with. They create great musical journeys and this album is no exception from ‘Yeah Yeah Song’ to the end.
