Branding yourself

One of the hardest things I personally find to do is actually brand myself. With the move back to freelance this is something I have faced head long over the past few weeks. I always have a huge amount of "uh oh" about this whole process. This time has proven to not be any different.

During this particular branding time I have thought a bit why I find this so hard. Being a great believer in only being able to learn from something once you know about it, I turned to analysing exactly why this is such an issue for me. The main point really is that although I have lined up work for myself now for many years whilst doing the 2 full time job thing; I never really thought about an objective for my own business.

I openly admit this was not reading my own rule book on business. It threw up the point that when it comes to yourself getting this right is possibly more important than for any client. So, with this point nailed I was able to focus on what my objective and mini mission statement would be. For those of you interested, it comes down to the following:
"Free yourself from the internet. When it comes to the internet, Logical Binary makes natural sense."

So, why this particular direction? Well, as I do both web design and development mixed in with graphics and branding; it makes sense to sell myself on this angle. I have really lost count of the amount of clients that have stated they are happy being able to come to one person for their entire internet solution. Perhaps, I always look this for granted, now I do not however and it has become the focus for my work.

As with any branding exercise, once you know the objective, the branding can fall into place. This was infact the case and as I prepare to tweek my branding and new design to pixel death; I am finally feeling happier about the whole process.

This has been yet another good lesson for me (I am starting to feel at 30 that I will never stop learning lessons). Branding is not just about getting a pretty logo and design, it is about creating a vehicle for the company or product that will enhance the business model and promote it. When it comes down to branding common sense really is key and without a solid notion design weakness ensues. It proves that no matter what business branding is essential and getting it right takes focus and analysis.
