Currently I am drawing to the end of a redesign for the company I work for. It is of course within the boundaries of the already established corporate branding that this company has. As a result the design that I came up with a while ago was confined and restricted. I always find those type of sites harder when I guess in theory they should be easier. When designing for the web there are of course certain confined that you work in ranging from browser, platform and language limitations. Those exact limitations I was talking to a junior today about infact. However, I find that when you combine these with creating a design to a strict format and branding the task becomes a great more difficult.
Why I said in theory was that on paper to come up with a design relatively similar to the one before might seem a doodle. Once you start working in those confines which are normally set by another designer, the task becomes somewhat more extended. The main aim of course of this redesign (as with so many lately I find) was to bring it into line with regards to putting pure css, xhtml and implementing such technologies as our in-house CMS onto it. Juggling all this and coming up with something that didn’t make me want to jump out of the window was not easy for me.
Coupled with this again it falls to me to come up with marketing to put on this site. Now, I am not hopeless at this, but it is hardly my strongest point and I always struggle. With my view point being anti-jargon I also find the task made more frustrating. It is true that jargon will easily fill space, to some look important and also flow like wine. I am so far bashing my head on it with a view to rolling out this week.
