There are many factors as to why someone reads a blog post or clicks off. One of the most important of these is the title. This applies to feeds, archives and posts themselves. A great decider on to read on or pass is the craft of title creation. Titles are majorly important in blogging and the actual writing of a good one a tricky art form in itself. Be they informative, humorous or insightful; titles matter. I can draw this conclusion from my own feed and blog behaviour.
With the wealth of blog posts out there and bulk of feeds freshly delivered to our desktops piping hot; we are spoilt for choice as readers. One of the major reasons to click and view more is the title of the posts. Titles are important in many areas of writing on and offline – perhaps it might be argued they are even more significant in the form of blogs.
I am not going to give you the recipe of how to make a great title. This elusive recipe for the perfect title is a hard one to get and I make no claims to having the solution. I still find myself bemused by the amount of people who ignore the power of a title. As a blogger you won’t get it right all of the time and with every title comes the possibility you have got it wrong. Whether the title works or not also can come down to the personal choice of the reader.
With this in mind I have decided to start a little weekly feature on thie blog. I am going to over the week collect some titles from feeds (mainly blogs) and post them. The main reason I am doing this is to research for myself and also provide a possible insight into achieving that perfect audience drawing title. Titles are something I’ve been looking at lately and one my travels through google I have started to collect what I think are some nice gems.
I am going to at a later date open this up to submission and would currently love to be emailed if anyone has any great titles they come across. The criteria for the title submission is not definite and so just email anything you think qualifies. This is a weekly thing but it is not about titles that just appeared that week. It is about titles you have found, you have noticed that week.
So, here is the first weekly installment of titles to die for :
Chicken Soup Posts : Creativing Passionate Users
Put The Pajamas Back On, Your Birthday Suit Is Showing : Business Logs
Attack of the Zombie Copy : A List Apart
When The Other Woman Is An Xbox : GamersCircle
A Torrent or a Trickle? : Wired
You’re Only a Newbie Once : Wired
Fart in my comments : Joshua Ink
That is about it for now for titles to die for. I am interested in seeing if anyone has any good suggestions for future titles to die for.
